Why do we use pronouns?

  • It is important to remember that not everyone identifies as male or female, and not everyone uses he/him or she/her pronouns.
  • Some people may use they/them pronouns, or other gender-neutral pronouns such as they/ them, ze/hir or xe/xem.
  • Respecting a person’s pronouns and gender identity is a way of affirming their right to self-determination and respecting their individuality.
  • Using the correct pronouns is a simple yet powerful way of showing respect for a person’s gender identity and expression, and can help to create a more affirming and inclusive environment for everyone.
  • Pronouns matter because they are an essential part of how individuals identify themselves and how they wish to be addressed by others.
  • For many people, the pronouns that others use are a critical aspect of their gender identity and expression. Using the correct pronouns can help affirm an individual’s identity while misusing or ignoring their preferred pronouns can be hurtful and disrespectful.

  • Reduces misgendering: As more people become aware of the importance of pronouns and how to use them correctly, it can help break down harmful stereotypes and stigmas
  • Demonstrates allyship: Using pronouns can demonstrate allyship and support for the LGBTQ+ community

  • Encourages open dialogue: Using pronouns can help to create a culture of open dialogue around gender identity and expression
